The guide

Overview

Raise the sails and fight for the richest hold on the reef. Block Ship Battle is a fast pirate brawler with real broadside combat: your cannons fire to the side, so every fight is a dance of turning, timing and reloading until your guns bear on the enemy — then KABOOM. Sink ships, scoop up floating treasure and carry your gold to a harbour — only banked gold counts, and a fat hold makes you the target everyone is hunting. Hunt the Treasure Galleon, sail into storms for the treasure they wash up, and level up during the match: every level fits your ship with a new upgrade you can see, up to your captains ultimate. Six ships and captains, each with two abilities and an ultimate. Five modes, from Plunder Brawl to Last Ship Afloat, a sixteen-ship battle royale inside a closing storm. Your progress is saved: unlock new ships, sails and paint as you play.

What it's like to play

Somewhere between a puzzle and a story sits the adventure game. You are given a world to walk through and a reason to be there. Progress comes from paying attention: a loose brick, a character who mentions a key, a path you missed. The pace is steady rather than frantic, and sessions usually last until you reach a satisfying moment to stop.

How to play

1Move through the first area slowly and interact with everything; doors, drawers, signs and people all respond.
2Pick up any item that can be picked up, then open your inventory to see what you are carrying.
3Try items on locked or broken things nearby. The game will tell you if the combination does nothing.
4Use markers or a map if the game has one to see which areas you have not yet visited.

Why it's worth a go

Block Ship Battle is a slow game in the best sense. It gives you time to think and rewards you for looking carefully. It is free to play in the browser with nothing to install, and it suits a quiet evening on a laptop as well as a tablet on the sofa.
