How long is a typical session of Blocks 8?

As long as you want. Individual stages take a minute or two, and you can stop after one or carry on for an hour. There is no penalty for leaving.

Will the game remember where I got to?

Possibly. Many puzzles store progress in your browser on the device you used. Clearing browser data or switching devices will usually reset it, since there is no account.

Is this suitable for young children?

Most puzzle games are family friendly. The early stages are simple enough for younger kids with a little guidance, though reading the goal may need an adult nearby.

The guide

Overview

Simple but fun and challenging block puzzle tetris arcade game. Fill a row or column with the pieces you have available to score. The logic is similar with tetris, but you can move the blocks freely by dragging and drooping the pieces.

Sit down with a puzzle game and the first few minutes are about learning its particular logic. Which tiles merge, which paths connect, what counts as a match. Once you have it, the game becomes a series of small, satisfying problems. Some are solved in seconds. Others need you to undo, rethink and try a completely different order. The pace is yours to set.

How to play

1Watch what happens on the first stage carefully; the game teaches its rules through the layout rather than a wall of text.
2Tap or click the object you want to move, then tap its destination. Swipes also work in most tile and block puzzles.
3Look for chain reactions, where one move clears space that makes the next move possible.
4Before using your last move or piece, check the board again for anything you missed.

Why it's worth a go

It costs nothing and asks nothing of you except a few minutes of attention. Blocks 8 works well as a mental reset between tasks, and because it runs in the browser with no download you can play on whatever device is nearest. Stages are short enough to stop at any point.

Who it's for

Office workers on a break, students between classes, parents with ten quiet minutes, and anyone who finds matching or sorting things oddly relaxing. Reading ability helps for instructions but is rarely essential.
