Fireboy and Watergirl is a cool adventure game, here at the Forest Temple, collect all the diamonds and get each character to the exit door. Since fire and water don't mix, don't let Fireboy go in the water lakes and don't let Watergirl go in the fire lakes... And keep them both out of the green lakes.

Nothing about an adventure game is in a hurry. You wander, you notice, you pick up a thing you do not yet understand. Later it makes sense. A session might be twenty minutes of exploring one area or an hour spent crossing several. The story, however light, gives the wandering a purpose, and the small puzzles give the story a rhythm.
