The guide

Overview

Puzzle rectangular tags (also called Gem Puzzle, Boss Puzzle, Game of Fifteen, Mystic Square) and its variations, including a variant with pictures. The puzzle is a set of identical square tiles with numbers printed on them, lying in a rectangular box. One square field in the box remains empty. The goal of the game is to arrange the tiles in ascending order by moving them in the box, preferably with as few moves as possible.

What it's like to play

The best moment in any puzzle game is the one just after you have been stuck. You have tried the obvious moves, nothing worked, and then you spot the thing you overlooked. The whole board resolves in a few quick taps. Sessions are built from a string of those moments, separated by stretches of quiet staring. It is slow in a good way.

Controls

The object of the game is to place the tiles in ascending order from left to right and top to bottom swapping them with the empty cage starting with tile number 1 in the top left corner and ending with the empty cage in the bottom right corner of the bo

How to play

1Identify the goal first. Look for a target, counter or outline that tells you what a finished stage looks like.
2Make a move you can reverse, then see how the board reacts. Most puzzles let you undo or restart freely.
3Group similar pieces or clear blockers early so you have room to work later in the stage.
4When you solve a stage, note what the trick was; the next few stages will usually build on it.

Why it's worth a go

Because it fits into the gaps. GBox Slide and Swap does not need a download or a login, and a stage takes about as long as waiting for a kettle. It is also one of the few kinds of game that leaves you feeling slightly sharper rather than drained.

Who it's for

Players of any age who like a quiet challenge. Grandparents and grandchildren can share it. People who commute, anyone who enjoys logic problems, and those who want a game that does not demand quick fingers.
