The guide

Overview

Gear Shift Race is an adrenaline-fueled drag racing game that puts you in control of fully manual cars with realistic gear shifting and clutch timing. Set in a sprawling city ruled by rival street gangs and their powerful leaders, every race is a fight for speed, skill, and reputation. Rise through the underground ranks by defeating gang kings in intense drag battles. Earn cash and reputation to upgrade engine power, tuning, paint, and skins. Master precise gear shifts and perfect clutch control to unleash maximum acceleration. In Gear Shift Race, split-second decisions decide victory or defeat.

What it's like to play

Most of a racing game happens in the half second before a corner. Brake too late and you lose two places. Brake too early and the car behind slips past. Everything else, the straights and the boosts and the paint jobs, exists to set up those moments. Races are short and sessions are usually a string of them, with lap times and positions to measure your progress against.

How to play

1Start a race and use the first lap to learn the track layout, especially where the sharpest turns are.
2Steer with arrow keys or tilt, accelerate with the up key or on-screen pedal, and brake lightly before corners.
3Stay to the inside on tight turns and the outside on fast ones; it is the shortest route through most tracks.
4Watch the position indicator and the minimap if there is one, so you know when to push and when to defend.
