Kuromi Maker

Dress-up, decorating and styling games make up most of this category, and the sessions have a particular rhythm. You are given a blank canvas, a character or a room or a cake, and a panel of options. You try things on, swap them out, and settle on something you like. There is no timer and rarely a score. The game ends when you are happy with the result.

• Depending on the gaming device a computer mouse click or a simple touch on touch screens is used for control

1. 1Pick a character, room or project from the start screen, then look for the tabs or icons that open each set of options.
2. 2Tap or click an item to apply it. Most games let you swap it instantly, so try several before deciding.
3. 3Work in order: base layers first, then accessories or details, so later choices sit on top properly.
4. 4Look for a camera or save icon when you are done. Many games let you keep a picture of your creation.

Kuromi Maker is creative rather than competitive. You make something, admire it, and maybe make another. It is free and runs in the browser with nothing to download, so it is easy to open on a phone or tablet and just as easy to put down when you are finished.

Mostly younger players who like fashion, styling and decorating, though plenty of adults find these games relaxing too. Suits anyone who prefers making choices to beating a clock.

Can I save what I make in Kuromi Maker?

Many games in this category offer a save or photo button inside the player. Progress may also be stored in your browser, but it does not sync to an account.

Is there a right answer?

Rarely. Most styling and dress-up games are open ended. Some include a theme or a brief to follow, but the result is yours to judge.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tapping to select and drag to place both work well on touchscreens, and most of these games are designed with phones and tablets in mind.
