What it's like to play

More to play

24 games

Dress-up, decorating and styling games make up most of this category, and the sessions have a particular rhythm. You are given a blank canvas, a character or a room or a cake, and a panel of options. You try things on, swap them out, and settle on something you like. There is no timer and rarely a score. The game ends when you are happy with the result.

How to play

1Pick a character, room or project from the start screen, then look for the tabs or icons that open each set of options.
2Tap or click an item to apply it. Most games let you swap it instantly, so try several before deciding.
3Work in order: base layers first, then accessories or details, so later choices sit on top properly.
4Look for a camera or save icon when you are done. Many games let you keep a picture of your creation.

Why it's worth a go

Penguin Cafe is creative rather than competitive. You make something, admire it, and maybe make another. It is free and runs in the browser with nothing to download, so it is easy to open on a phone or tablet and just as easy to put down when you are finished.

Who it's for

Mostly younger players who like fashion, styling and decorating, though plenty of adults find these games relaxing too. Suits anyone who prefers making choices to beating a clock.
