How long is a session of Risk of Fairies?

Most people play for ten to twenty minutes, covering a few stages or one tough boss. There is a pause button if you need to step away.

Can I change the controls?

Some action games offer key remapping in their options menu. Many use fixed bindings. The start screen will show which keys do what.

Does the game need sound?

Not strictly, but audio cues often signal incoming attacks, so playing with sound on makes a noticeable difference in harder stages.

The guide

Overview

Seek out the red crystal for each level to summon the boss, or fight the continuously spawning fairies to save up money for treasure chests. The game becomes progressively harder as time passes. Don't dawdle. The game has no definitive ending. Strive to live as long as possible. Gameplay Enabled up to 4 player multiplayer (let us know if it breaks.) Added a true Lunatic mode Time scales 50% faster (due to the small map currently) Added an temporary invulnerability state to the 3rd ability, Dash Added 4th ability, Master Spark Added affixes to enemies, making them more difficult to defeat but with greater reward Diversified the enemies. They shoot more specialized patterns and deal more damage Enemies spawn at the start of the stage Added 9 new items, removed the Uncommon Tengu Geta item Added combat shrine (spawns higher level enemies) Added gameover screen Added pause button Quality of Life Added an item display for the items gathered so far You can hover over items and abilities to get their descriptions Messages appear when you interact with shrines Added buff visuals and improved some existing bullet visuals Added item gallery to check out all items in the game Bugs Fixed the sacrifice shrine being able to kill you Fixed ability charge items resetting on a new stage Fixed exponential items scaling too hard Fixed numerous items not working exactly as intended

What it's like to play

Fast hands help, but pattern recognition wins. An action game shows you an enemy, lets you get hit once, and expects you to learn from it. Over a session you build a library of tells: this one lunges, that one shoots on a count of three. Stages are short, health is precious, and the boss at the end of a section is where everything you learned gets tested.

How to play

1Learn to move and attack on the first screen, then deliberately watch the first enemy attack once before fighting back.
2Dodge toward open space, never toward a wall, and keep your back clear of other enemies.
3Alternate attacking with short retreats. Constant offence drains your health faster than anything else.
4Before a boss, collect every pickup on the stage. You will need the margin.

Why it's worth a go

Risk of Fairies delivers a proper fight with no setup. It is free, runs in the browser, and needs no download or account. Stages are tight and sessions are short enough to play in a break, long enough to feel like you did something.

Who it's for

Suits players with decent reflexes and a taste for pressure. Teenagers and adults are the natural fit, with older children managing the early stages. Younger players will likely find it too fast.
