The guide

Overview

Break into the world of thrilling 2D top-down shooter Tanks of the Galaxy and take part in epic tank battles. The rules are simple: destroy enemy tanks with different weapons, dodge their projectiles, use shields and environment to defeat the enemy. Earn coins to upgrade your tank, buy and upgrade more powerful weapons. Enjoy truly addictive gameplay and become the most devastating member of the tank war.

What it's like to play

Racing games start with a countdown and a line of opponents, and from there it is all about the next corner. You accelerate, brake a fraction late, drift wide, recover. Position changes constantly. A single race takes two or three minutes, and a session is usually a run of them, each one a slightly cleaner line than the last. The finish line arrives before you are ready for it.

How to play

1Check the controls on the start screen. Arrow keys or WASD steer and accelerate on desktop; tilt or on-screen pedals on phones.
2Brake before a corner, not in it, and turn in smoothly. Jerky steering costs more time than slow entry speed.
3Follow the racing line the other cars take on your first lap, then start cutting it closer.
4Use boosts on straights where you can hold them, not mid-corner where you will lose control.

Why it's worth a go

Tanks of the Galaxy is a clean hit of speed with no setup. It runs free in a browser tab, needs no download or login, and a race lasts a few minutes. The learning curve is gentle at first and gets steep, which keeps a session interesting well past the first few races.

Who it's for

Suits anyone who likes cars and speed, from children who can steer with arrow keys to adults chasing a lap time. Fans of kart racers and arcade driving games will feel at home.
