Can I play Tanuki Sunset without a mouse?

Yes. On desktop, racing games almost always use the keyboard. On phones, you steer by tilting or with on-screen buttons.

Is there a way to practice a track?

Some racing games offer a time trial or practice mode without opponents. Otherwise, the first race on a track doubles as a practice run.

Why do I keep spinning out?

Usually from steering too hard at speed. Ease off the accelerator as you turn and make smaller steering inputs. It gets easier quickly.

The guide

Overview

Tanuki Sunset is a third-person longboard-skating game where players play as a raccoon skating downhill on a procedurally generated synthwave-themed seaside road. Drift your way around the narrow corners, gather Tanuki Bits to fill up your Bonus Roulette Meter and try and gather as many points as you can. Drift often. Get some air-time and avoid cars and obstacles while pushing your luck close to the walls and edges to get near-miss moments and tight-squeezes to maximize your score. Master the longboard as you drift through stunning mountain ranges, swerve through bustling city streets, and along the sandy beaches of Sunset Island. Train to perform epic tricks, from jumping off-ramp to longboarding backwards. Grab Your Longboard and Race to the Top in Tanuki Sunset. Game Developed by: squidsquadgames

What it's like to play

Most of a racing game happens in the half second before a corner. Brake too late and you lose two places. Brake too early and the car behind slips past. Everything else, the straights and the boosts and the paint jobs, exists to set up those moments. Races are short and sessions are usually a string of them, with lap times and positions to measure your progress against.

How to play

1Start a race and use the first lap to learn the track layout, especially where the sharpest turns are.
2Steer with arrow keys or tilt, accelerate with the up key or on-screen pedal, and brake lightly before corners.
3Stay to the inside on tight turns and the outside on fast ones; it is the shortest route through most tracks.
4Watch the position indicator and the minimap if there is one, so you know when to push and when to defend.

Why it's worth a go

Tanuki Sunset is a browser game you can start in seconds and leave in a few minutes without any cost or install. The driving is simple to pick up, the corners are not, and that gap is where the fun is. No account is needed and nothing is left behind.
