Strongest in Russia and its neighbours, Yandex Maps covers more than 2,000 cities in Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Turkey, Ukraine, Latvia and Estonia. It pairs a large database of organisations, with contacts, hours, services, photos and reviews, with routing for drivers, public transport users, cyclists and pedestrians. Transport layers show buses, trams, trolleybuses and minibuses moving in real time, along with live traffic, official parking with prices, and street panoramas. Walking routes use paths through parks and between buildings, bike routes account for underpasses and road types, and driving directions include voice guidance plus speed camera and speed limit warnings. Users can mark road events, write reviews and upload photos. Floor plans exist for Moscow's major shopping malls. Offline maps are small downloads (Moscow is about 187 MB) and support search, driving routes and voice navigation. An Apple Watch app shows nearby stops and arrival times.
For Russia and its neighbours, this is the map. Yandex Maps spans 2,000-plus cities across Russia and eight nearby countries, Kazakhstan and Belarus to Georgia, Turkey, Latvia and Estonia among them, with a deep business directory of hours, contacts, photos and reviews, and routing for cars, transit, bikes and walking.
Live layers show trams, buses, trolleybuses and minibuses crawling along their routes, plus traffic, paid parking with prices and street panoramas. Users add road events, reviews and photos. Offline maps are compact, around 187 MB for Moscow, and handle search, driving routes and spoken guidance. On the wrist, the Watch app lists nearby stops and arrival times.
In a Russian city, a day starts with checking when the next tram or minibus arrives, watching the icon crawl along the line in real time. Walking directions follow park paths and courtyards between buildings rather than sticking to main roads, which is how people in those cities move.
Finding a café means reading reviews and photos in the directory, checking hours, and picking a route. Drivers get voice guidance with camera and speed limit warnings and can see where paid parking is and what it costs. Visitors download the city before arriving so search and routing work without a local SIM.
Coverage. In the countries it serves, global maps apps are often weaker on business listings, transit data and address detail, and Yandex is the local standard. Travellers heading to Moscow, Almaty, Tbilisi or Istanbul are told to install it before they land, and the small offline downloads make that easy. The 4.6 rating on 10K+ reviews here reflects a non-Russian-market listing of a much larger product.
Dense, in the way a good city map should be. The five screenshots will show the map with transit vehicles moving, a business card with photos and reviews, and probably a route or panorama. Yandex's cartography is detailed down to building outlines and courtyard paths. Expect a lot on screen at once, with layers you toggle rather than a minimal view.
Version 31.1.4 is a high major number implying years of regular releases, and the same version string appears on the sibling Yandex Navigator app, suggesting a shared release cycle. The developer name, DIRECT CURSUS COMPUTER SYSTEMS TRADING LLC, is the publishing entity rather than the Yandex brand, which is worth knowing. App Store only on this page.
Moscow or Tbilisi trips
Download the city before landing and have search, routes and voice offline.
Real-time tram watching
Buses and trams move live on the map, so you know whether to run.
Finding local businesses
Hours, photos and reviews for shops and cafés in cities other apps cover thinly.
Rated 4+ and free. The listing mentions no in-app purchases or ads. Posting reviews, photos or road events will require a Yandex account; browsing and routing may not, though the listing doesn't say.
Offline maps are downloads of a stated size, about 187 MB for Moscow, so plan storage per city. Coverage is strongest in the nine named countries and should not be relied on elsewhere. The publishing entity differs from the brand name, which some users will want to research.
Our take
Essential for anyone living in or travelling to the countries it covers; nothing else matches its directory and transit data there. Install it before the trip and download the city. Skip it everywhere else, where its coverage is thin and a global maps app will serve you better.
