Pixel-art American football where you manage the roster and call the plays yourself.

Retro Bowl is a compact American football game drawn in a deliberately old-school pixel style. Away from the field you run the franchise: trimming and rebuilding the roster, handling press duties and keeping players with fragile egos onside. When the game kicks off, you take over and call the plays yourself. The management side is kept light on purpose, so a season moves along quickly and the focus stays on the matches. The aim is straightforward: carry your team to the Retro Bowl and win it. It's pitched at the armchair quarterback who is sure they could do better than the real thing. Free to download.
American football in a deliberately old pixel style, from New Star Games. Off the field you run the franchise: trim and rebuild the roster, handle the press, and keep players with fragile egos happy. On the field you call the plays yourself and watch them unfold in a few seconds of retro animation.
Management is deliberately kept light so that seasons move quickly and the matches stay the focus. The goal is simply to reach the Retro Bowl and win it.
A season is a sequence of short matches and shorter management screens. You pick a play, swipe to throw or run, and the pixel players resolve it. Between games you deal with a disgruntled receiver, sign a free agent, or field a press question.
It's quick enough that a whole season fits into a few commutes, and the light touch means the decisions that matter, who to keep and what to call, are never buried.
It became a word-of-mouth hit among people who don't normally play sports games, and that's who searches for it: armchair quarterbacks who think they could do better, plus fans of compact, well-made retro design. The New Star name carries over from the studio's soccer game, which brings its own audience.
Chunky pixel art and a flat, readable interface, in the style of 16-bit sports games. New Star's page has five screenshots. The field view is top-down with small sprites, and the management screens are text and portraits rather than 3D, so the whole thing is light on the eyes and the battery.
A pixel football game with a hundred thousand ratings averaging 4.8 is a remarkable thing. New Star Games has a history of supporting its sports titles for years. Only the App Store appears in our data, and no version number is given, so we can't confirm when the last roster or feature update landed.
Armchair play-callers
You choose the play and throw the ball, so every result is yours to own.
Quick-season franchise running
Light management means a full campaign fits into spare moments.
Pixel sports purists
The 16-bit presentation is a feature, not a limitation.
A 4+ rating and no price tag. The listing says nothing about purchases, ads, accounts or offline play, so all are unknown; a compact pixel game is likely small to store and plausibly works offline, but neither is confirmed. Regional restrictions aren't mentioned. Knowledge of American football helps but isn't strictly required.
Our take
Install it if you've ever watched a game and shouted at the coach, or if you just like tight, well-crafted retro design. It respects your time. Anyone who wants deep stats, full simulation or licensed real teams should skip it; the lightness is the design, and there are no NFL names here.
