Small business owners in the US and Canada are the audience for Wave's mobile app, the phone-side companion to its desktop accounting software. Freelancers, contractors and consultants use it to send invoices and estimates and keep tabs on expenses while away from the desk, with everything syncing back to the Wave account on desktop. Invoices can carry a logo and custom branding, and the app shows whether each one has been sent, viewed, paid or is overdue, with a notification when money arrives. Estimates convert into invoices with a tap. A dashboard surfaces profit and loss, overdue amounts and upcoming payments, plus accounting reports for tax time. Optional online payments let clients pay by card or bank transfer. Receipt scanning uses optical character recognition to pull expenses out of photos. Receipts are an add-on to the Starter Plan or included in Pro, which also brings automatic bank imports, late payment reminders, extra users and live chat support.
The phone end of a desktop accounting system. Wave's mobile app lets US and Canadian small business owners send invoices and estimates, see which have been paid, viewed or gone overdue, and capture receipts, with everything syncing to the Wave account on the desktop where the full accounting lives.
Invoices carry a logo and branding, estimates convert to invoices with a tap, a dashboard shows profit and loss and what's due, and optional online payments take card and bank transfer from clients. Receipt scanning costs extra on the Starter Plan but comes bundled with Pro, as do bank imports, reminders for late payers, additional users and live chat.
A freelancer's week: send an estimate from the van, convert it to an invoice when the job's agreed, get a notification when the client views it and another when the money lands. Receipts get photographed at the till and read by OCR into expenses. The dashboard answers the Friday question of what's overdue.
The heavy work, reports and reconciliation, happens on the desktop; the app is for the moments between, and it's designed to be opened and closed in under a minute.
Existing Wave users, mostly, who want their invoicing in a pocket. Freelancers, contractors and consultants in the US and Canada search for it because the desktop product is established and the app extends it. The paid-viewed-overdue status on each invoice is the feature that saves awkward follow-up emails. Receipt capture matters at tax time.
Business apps of this kind are forms, lists and a dashboard, and the five screenshots on the page should show an invoice, the status list and the profit and loss view. Expect a clean, corporate layout with status colours doing the work of telling you what's paid and what isn't. Branding on invoices means your logo appears, but the app's own look is likely neutral.
Version 4.22.0 indicates a fourth major version with many updates, consistent with a companion to an actively run service. The rating is 4.4 from just over a thousand reviews, lower than most apps here and from a smaller base. Wave Financial Inc is a named company with a paid tier to protect. The App Store is the only store linked on this page.
On-site invoicing
Send, track and get paid without returning to the desk.
Estimates that become invoices
One tap converts an agreed quote.
Receipt capture for taxes
OCR reads expenses out of photographed receipts.
Rated 17+, standard for financial tools. Free to install, but the structure is tiered: receipts cost extra on the Starter Plan or come with Pro, and Pro adds bank imports, reminders, extra users and chat support; prices aren't in the listing. Online payments carry processing arrangements the listing doesn't detail. A Wave account is required, and the service is for the US and Canada only. A connection is needed to sync. App Store only.
Our take
Install it if you already run your books on Wave and work away from a desk; the invoice status alerts alone earn the space. It's the wrong starting point for anyone not on Wave or outside the US and Canada. Check which plan you need before counting on receipt scanning, since it isn't free.
