Billed as a hack-and-slash for people bored of button mashing, Shadow Hunter is an action RPG in a ruined dark fantasy setting. You play a Shadow Hunter, someone blessed by the Ancient One with the power to fight the demons that have overrun the mortal world, and the combat system and character control scheme are the developer's main points of pride. Boss fights are the centrepiece: giant demons whose souls you collect to climb a dungeon and an evil tower, and which will flatten you without decent gear and practice. Those souls also upgrade hundreds of weapons and armour pieces from common to legendary. There are multiple playable characters with their own skills and approaches, four or more PvE modes and PvP. It plays offline. Free to download; on Apple devices it needs iOS 12 or later.
Enigma Software pitches Shadow Hunter at players who think most mobile action games are button-mashers. You are a hunter blessed by the Ancient One, fighting demons that have overrun a ruined fantasy world, and the studio puts its combat system and control scheme front and centre.
Boss fights are the point. Giant demons guard the floors of a dungeon and a tower, and their souls both open the next floor and upgrade a vast armoury of weapons and armour from common to legendary. Multiple characters, four or more PvE modes and a PvP option sit alongside, and the whole thing works offline.
You pick a character, enter a floor, and fight through lesser demons to a boss that will kill you unless your gear and timing are up to it. Dodging and reading attack patterns matter more than tapping fast. Dying sends you back to upgrade, which is where the collected souls go.
Then you climb another floor, meet a nastier boss, and repeat. Switching characters changes the approach enough to justify a second run. Sessions can be a single boss attempt or an hour of grinding gear.
The combination of offline play, a 4.8 rating and proper boss fights is rare on mobile, and that's what gets it searched for. People stuck on planes or commutes without signal want an action RPG that doesn't stop working, and those tired of auto-battle games want to actually control the character. The dark fantasy tone is the hook for Souls-style fans.
Expect a side-scrolling or 2.5D view with hand-drawn, shadowy backdrops and oversized boss sprites. Virtual buttons for attack, dodge and skills sit on screen, since the control scheme is a selling point. The listing has five screenshots, which should give a sense of the boss scale and the gear menus.
A 4.8 rating from over 10,000 ratings is unusually high for an action RPG and suggests the combat delivers on its promise. The developer is a Vietnamese joint-stock company with other action titles. The requirement of iOS 12 or later suggests the build hasn't needed the latest OS. Only the App Store link is on our page.
Boss-fight specialists
Pattern-reading and gear planning decide every major encounter.
Signal-free commutes
Full offline play means the campaign works anywhere.
Loot grinders
Hundreds of weapons and armour pieces across rarity tiers give the upgrade path depth.
Rated 12+, free to download, and playable offline. The listing doesn't mention in-app purchases or ads, though a free loot-driven RPG normally has both, so assume they exist until you see otherwise. PvP presumably needs a connection. On Apple hardware it requires iOS 12 or later.
Account requirements, storage size and regional availability aren't stated. The Play Store isn't linked on this page.
Our take
If you want a demanding action RPG that works without a signal, this is one of the better-regarded options and the rating backs that up. Skip it if you prefer games that play themselves or if large difficulty spikes put you off, because the bosses are designed to flatten unprepared players.
