Animated radar centred on the user's location appears the moment MyRadar opens, which is most of what people use it for: a loop of up to two hours showing what's about to arrive. It's a weather app for checking the sky quickly rather than reading long forecasts. Rain alerts are its distinguishing feature. Using a patent-pending prediction method, the app sends a notification up to an hour before rain reaches the current location, with timing to the minute and an estimate of intensity and duration. Map layers can be stacked on the radar: animated surface and jet-stream winds, frontal boundaries with high and low pressure systems, earthquakes filtered by severity and time, global hurricane tracks, aviation data including AIRMETs, SIGMETs and live flight paths, and US wildfire activity. National Weather Service warnings such as tornado alerts come through as notifications, and users can ask to be told whenever a tropical storm forms or changes category.
